04 September 2025, Demo: Implement the Supreme Court Ruling, Scottish Parliament, Edinburgh

We held a demonstration outside Parliament to tell the Scottish Government that, quite simply, #WomenWontWait any longer for the Supreme Court ruling to be fully implemented.

Covered in the Herald: ‘Get it up ye Sturgeon!’ The new front in the trans war

We had a stand at the conference and a fringe event on the FWS Supreme Court ruling – the implications for the UK and Scotland, especially the public sector, and how can we address ongoing resistance and attempts to subvert the rule of law? The event was chaired by Pam Gosal MSP with speakers Susan Smith (FWS), Jenny Willmott (Scottish Lesbians) and James Cleverly MP.

Akua Reindorf (EHRC), Maya Forstater (Sex Matters), Susan Smith (FWS) and Prof Alice Sullivan briefing a cross-party meeting of MPs and peers. Organised by Labour Women’s Declaration, Conservatives for Women and Liberal Voice for Women, and chaired by Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi.

Green Councillor, Alex Staniforth, tabled a motion (see point 8.5) for discussion at the full meeting of Council on Thursday 20th March on Edinburgh Women’s Aid and the single sex policy they operate for refuge spaces and group counselling. The motion called for EWA to reverse their policy and resolved to review their contract for funding from Edinburgh Council. See our blog post City of Edinburgh Council Meeting for more information.

Council leader Jane Meagher came out to speak.

Speakers at the SNP event included John Swinney, Jenny Gilruth, Kaukab Stewart and Nicola Sturgeon. The protest was reported in the Scottish Daily Express: John Swinney faces protest outside SNP International Women’s Day event as he’s asked ‘Is Isla Bryson your type?’ and The Times: Swinney to meet feminist campaigners who oppose SNP trans reforms. Also the Scottish Sun and Daily Mail.

And a couple of excellent shots taken by Iain Masterton:

More of Iain’s photographs of the protest are here.
